Chapter Five

“Isn’t it just beautiful?” Grace sighed beside Anna, standing up on her toes. They were seated behind two remarkably burly Monterran men, but there was just enough room between them for Anna to get a clear view of the bridal party. She wasn’t alone in her interest, of course—guests and what seemed like dozens of photographers all discreetly jockeyed for position, seeking the best angle to view the happy couple.

The wedding ceremony was taking place just before sunset, on a small stage that had been constructed on a stone patio just south of the castle. The patio was framed by a stunning view of the Monterran mountains, and Rosa de Gosta was an absolute vision in yards of antique lace, her dashing groom staring at her with an expression of pure rapture. “Which part?” she asked Grace. “The couple, the setting, or the wedding gown?”

“All of it,” came the nearly moaned reply. “Valentina is an absolute genius.”

Anna smiled and relaxed another notch, resolutely shifting her gaze to the man standing a few positions behind the groom. Paolo de Gosta seemed to shine more brightly than anyone on the platform, tall, dark and dashing. Despite her embarrassment and even outrage over his game with her early in the day, Anna already knew that she had the last laugh. Paolo may have thought he was teasing her or simply using her as a front, talking about an adventure to see the de Gosta’s children’s foundation operations in India, but there was a certain rightness about the idea that wouldn’t let her go.

And even her initial embarrassment over finally figuring out who she’d kissed all those years ago was fading quickly into an almost giddy relief. She’d not just kissed any old boy, nameless and foolish and ordinary. She’d kissed a future duke! Granted, she’d done so while she was blindfolded and she’d never heard from him again, but…

A sudden, jarring thought struck Anna, so startling that she went completely still.

Had she ever heard from him again?

There’d been all those letters Valentina de Gosta in the days and weeks following the garden party, all bearing the official seal of the de Gostas. She’d refused to look at them, so embarrassed by her shabby treatment at the hands of the boy she’d thought kissed her. Bruno? Bartholomew? She honestly couldn’t remember his name. And because of the furor Cristo had caused with the press, she’d realized more clearly than ever before the value of not being a distraction. She’d resolved to put everything about Monterra behind her, and eventually she’d issued her own edict to Valentina to please stop.

But…what if Valentina hadn’t been the only one to write her? What if Paolo…

Anna’s eyes fixed on the couple standing in the center of the bridal party, followed the melodic cadence of the words being spoken no matter how her mind was tumbling and spinning at the thought of her very own future duke possibly sending her letters. Letters she never replied to—letters in the end, that she’d never received.
